As winter arrives, many families face a common concern: rising energy costs. Although Andalusia enjoys a relatively good climate, heating costs can increase significantly in the winter months. However, there is an efficient solution to save money this winter with solar energy. Here we explain how harnessing solar energy can be a strategy to save on your winter energy bills.

Why is Andalusia's winter climate ideal for saving money this winter with solar energy?

These are some of the arguments that winter weather is perfect for solar energy in winter:

Sunshine hours

Despite the shorter days in winter, Andalusia still has plenty of sunshine during the day. This is an important factor as it allows solar energy systems to continue producing electricity all year round.

Efficiency hours of solar panels at higher temperatures

A common myth is that solar panels need heat to work, but in reality, panels perform better in cooler temperatures. This is because lower temperatures reduce the electrical resistance in the panels, causing them to generate more power.

Comparison with other regions

Andalusia’s sun shines brightly unlike other regions that may face cloudy or snowy skies in winter. This natural advantage makes Andalusia an ideal region for solar energy.

To save money this winter with solar energy, installing a solar panel system is an excellent option. The energy produced by your panels can be used to power your home, reducing the amount of electricity you need to buy from the grid. In addition, one of the great advantages of solar energy is the ability to store excess energy generated during the day in solar batteries. Thus, you can use that stored energy on cloudy days or at night. Solar self-consumption also helps you to be less dependent on the conventional electricity grid.

Financial incentives and rebates for solar energy in Andalusia

In Andalusia, there are several incentives and subsidies that can facilitate the installation of solar energy systems and help you save money this winter with solar energy. At Fulgor Solar, we assist you in the management of these procedures and in obtaining subsidies, such as self-consumption and tax rebates.

In addition to offering you comprehensive advice, we take care of all the administrative procedures, so that you can significantly reduce the initial cost of your solar installation. With these subsidies and the savings on your electricity bill, the investment in solar energy is recovered in a relatively short period of time, allowing you to enjoy an efficient and profitable system in the long term.

Summers in Spain provide the perfect opportunity to enjoy swimming in the pool for several months, but what if this wonderful season could be extended for longer, in a sustainable and economical way?

There is nothing better than heating the water in your pool to extend the swimming season, but in order to do this you need a power source to actually heat the water, which can be expensive. However, there is a system to heat the pool at no cost using solar panels. Here we explain how solar energy can be an ally to keep your pool running efficiently all summer long.

energía solar para piscinas

Extending the swimming season with solar power for swimming pools

Solar pumps

Solar pool pumps are a popular choice in Spain. They convert sunlight into electricity, allowing them to operate without the need for traditional mains power. There are different types of pumps: submersible pumps, which are ideal for small pools or simple systems, and surface pumps, which are more powerful and suitable for larger pools. By using solar energy you reduce your carbon footprint and reduce conventional electricity consumption.

In order to know that your pump is working properly, the solar panel system must be correctly dimensioned. You have to calculate the energy consumption of your pump, its capacity and the time it runs daily. Once you have this information, you can determine the number of panels you need. It is also advisable to install storage batteries, as they allow the pump to run even on cloudy days and times when there is not much sun. Another important point is to have professional installers to know where to place the solar panels and their correct maintenance.

Solar heating

There is another way to use solar energy in your pool, solar heaters. These capture the sun’s energy to power the water heating. There are several types of heaters, flat panel heaters which are more common and cheaper, and tubular heaters which are more efficient. These heaters offer environmental benefits as they use renewable energy to power the heating of your pool.

Can heaters be combined with solar pumps?

energía solar para piscinas

The answer is yes, they can be combined to increase energy efficiency. This not only reduces energy consumption, but also lowers operating costs. By combining these two systems, you can keep the water constantly warm and circulating. However, there are other methods of powering your pool to keep it warm.

Pool covers help to retain heat during the night, reducing temperature loss. Good pool insulation will also prevent heat dissipation, improving the efficiency of the heating system.

Solar savings in summer https://fulgorsolar.es/en/solar-savings-in-summer/ https://fulgorsolar.es/en/solar-savings-in-summer/#respond Tue, 06 Aug 2024 14:06:28 +0000 https://fulgorsolar.es/?p=5655
Ahorro solar en verano

During the summer months in Spain, the cost of electricity increases due to factors such as the use of air conditioning, the increase in domestic activity due to holidays and the prolonged use of electronic devices, which is a major concern for many families. Without a doubt, household appliances are the most energy-consuming equipment in our homes. These appliances can consume up to 9,922kWh per year. Nowadays, household appliances have a label showing their energy efficiency level, but as this was not the case in the past, older appliances tend to consume more.

How to understand the summer consumption peaks in Spain?

Other factors that increase the use of energy are peak hours, which are the periods of time when the demand for electricity reaches its peak and the price per kWh is higher. When is the peak hour? From Monday to Friday it has two periods, from 10:00 to 14:00h, and from 18:00 to 22:00h.

In this graph we can see that the highest peak in the price of electricity is at night, specifically at 22:00. This is a time when, normally, almost everyone is at home, so it is normal that much more electricity is consumed. The average price at this time is around 99.26 €/MWh.

On this website we can see the daily real time energy demand and we can see that, although it changes every day, the time when the most energy is consumed is at night, around 21:00 or 22:00. At some point this data may change, but if you install solar panels in your home, you will no longer have to worry about changes in the tariffs of the electricity companies.

Cooling your home in a sustainable way: Saving solar energy in summer

In order to make the most of solar production, it is important that the solar panels are positioned to the south with a specific tilt depending on the geographical location. In Spain, an inclination of around 30-40 degrees is usually ideal. Another point to consider when maximising solar output is shading, as this can significantly reduce the efficiency of the panels, so make sure there are no obstructions that cause shading.

Solar monitoring systems allow detailed tracking of the performance of the panels, identifying areas for improvement and ensuring that the system is working properly. Solar energy can power air conditioning systems, reducing the use of conventional grid power and allowing for more economical and sustainable cooling. If you want to know more about how to cool your home using solar energy, visit our blog Can I cool my house with solar panels?

Calculate your solar savings in summer

Ahorro solar en verano

Savings with the use of solar energy depend on several factors such as location, size of the solar system, electricity consumption patterns and electricity tariffs. Households in Spain can significantly reduce their electricity bills by switching to solar energy. In the long term, solar energy protects against future increases in electricity prices and provides greater energy independence.

In addition to investing in the use of solar energy, Spanish households can make savings through proper insulation, efficient appliances and the use of natural or artificial shading, such as having trees next to the house.

Solar energy offers an effective solution for powering down your summer electricity bills by providing economical and sustainable cooling. At Fulgor Solar we will make your summers cooler and more economical – join Fulgor Solar to create a more sustainable world!

Recycling of solar panels https://fulgorsolar.es/en/recycling-of-solar-panels/ https://fulgorsolar.es/en/recycling-of-solar-panels/#respond Tue, 06 Aug 2024 12:28:40 +0000 https://fulgorsolar.es/?p=4674

Solar panels have a very long lifespan, lasting at least 25-30 years with guaranteed maximum output, although after this period they can continue to generate electricity. Solar energy is one of the most positive solutions for both environmental impact and electricity bill savings.

However, with the large increase in solar panel installations, people are wondering what the recycling of solar panels looks like once they reach the end of their useful life. The solar panel recycling process can certainly be complicated, the good news is that the solar panel market is still very new. Therefore, the amount of solar panels that need to be recycled right now is still low, and we have time to be able to plan for the future!

Why might the recycling of solar panels be a problem?

The problem with the recycling of solar panels is that it will be very harmful to the environment if not managed correctly, as we will be faced with a lot of waste that will not be easy to recycle. With the growth of photovoltaic installations, it is estimated that by 2035, there will be 1.5 TWH (terawatts) of solar capacity installed worldwide. This implies that millions of solar panels will reach the end of their useful life at the same time.

reciclaje de los paneles solares

What will happen in a few years when my solar panels no longer work?

When solar panels stop working, the important question is: where will they go? If not managed properly, they can end up in landfills. According to a report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), it is estimated that by 2050, solar panel waste could reach between 60 and 78 million tonnes.

Will they all end up in a landfill?

Industry is taking steps to prevent all this waste from ending up in landfill. Currently, around 95% of the materials in a solar panel can be recycled. Many companies are developing technologies so that the materials used in solar panels, such as silicon or glass, can be easily recovered for reuse and not generate waste.

Projections for the year 2035

By that year, it is estimated that between 15% and 20% of the installed panels may need to be replaced, which implies millions of additional panels entering the waste stream.

How are solar panels recycled?

reciclaje de los paneles solares

The recycling process of solar panels is not straightforward, as they have many different components inside them. The most expensive component per unit mass of PV panel is silver, followed by copper, silicon, aluminium and glass. They also contain hazardous materials bonded to the inside with adhesives that make them difficult to separate. There are also two recycling techniques:

Thermal recycling

This technique involves burning plastics, adhesives and sealants to separate the cells from the glass. This is approximately 80% of the weight and components of the panel. Chemical processes are then carried out to separate the metal contacts and remove the anti-reflective coating.

Mechanical recycling

It consists of crushing the entire panel clear of its frame, cables and junction box and then processing it by chemical processes. After the main materials are shredded, they are separated and sent to separate recycling streams.

The recycling of solar panels is a major challenge that must be addressed to ensure that the environmental benefits of solar energy are not tarnished by poor waste management. It is important that both industry and governments work together to power the development and financing of effective recycling technologies with a positive impact on the environment.

At Fulgor Solar we always focus on sustainability, so it’s very important to us to do the right thing when it comes to recycling solar panels and waste in general. That’s why we make sure we work with suppliers that allow us to buy only the specific amount of supplies we need, promising that any waste coming from one of our facilities is absolutely minimal. In addition, we ensure that all packaging materials are sent for recycling wherever possible, reducing the amount of waste going to landfill.

As far as the solar panels are concerned, at the moment it’s not customary for us to remove old panels from our facilities, but we wanted to make sure that we were prepared for when the time comes to replace them. So we’ve partnered with a company called BTR-Trading who work to make sure that any of our waste panels are sent to the right centers to be separated and recycled into things like

Fulgor Solar’s founding company, located in the Netherlands, is required to have everything recycled separately and have someone come to collect the recycling, as it is a mandatory rule of the Dutch government. In 2023, Dutch legislation on solar panel recycling imposed importers selling solar panels to customers in the Netherlands to pay a recycling fee of €40 per ton, a huge jump from the previous fee of €6.50 per ton. Here in Spain we hope that this rule will be introduced which will encourage new recycling companies and make it easy to recycle.

New solar life! What happens to recycled solar panels? https://fulgorsolar.es/en/new-solar-life-what-about-recycled-solar-panels/ https://fulgorsolar.es/en/new-solar-life-what-about-recycled-solar-panels/#respond Thu, 01 Aug 2024 14:47:16 +0000 https://fulgorsolar.es/?p=4696

What about recycled solar panels?

¿Qué ocurre con los paneles solares reciclados?

Recycling solar panels can be a complicated but not impossible task. At the end of their useful life, panels can be transformed into a wide variety of products. They can be converted from new panels to electronic products or building materials. In this blog, we will show you the components that solar panels contain and the products they can be turned into.

What are solar panels made of?

Solar panels are made up of many materials, which must be recycled in the correct way to maximise their reuse and minimise their environmental impact. The panels are manufactured with different components depending on their characteristics, but we will see the main ones and how each one can be recycled or reused:

Silicon

This component comes from the photovoltaic cells, which are the most important part of the whole panel and where the conversion of sunlight into electricity takes place. Recycling silicon reduces the demand for silicon in mining, which is beneficial for both the economy and the environment. Silicon can be purified and reused in the manufacture of new solar cells, microchips, medical technology and devices.

Glass

The glass comes from the front cover of the panel, which protects the photovoltaic cells. Recycling glass not only conserves resources, but also reduces the production of new glass. This component can be reused to make new glass products, such as bottles or containers, windows and building materials.

Aluminium

The aluminium comes from the frame, which holds and protects the panel. By recycling this component, it can be reused to make a wide variety of aluminium products, from cans to automotive components to new solar panel frames.

Copper

It comes from the wires and electrical connections in the panel, which carry the electricity generated by the photovoltaic cells. Copper can be reused to make electrical cables, electronic components and building components.

Plastic

This element comes from the encapsulants and the back cover, which protect the photovoltaic cells from both the environment and wear and tear. Recycling plastic reduces plastic pollution and the production of new ones from oil. It can be reused to produce new plastics such as pipes, containers, insulation panels and other recycled plastic products.

¿Qué ocurre con los paneles solares reciclados?
Electrical components

These elements come from the electrical part of the panel. Their recycling maintains a supply chain, reducing the need to produce new ones. They can be reused in new electrical systems, cables, electric vehicle components and other connections.

Recycling solar panels is crucial to minimise the environmental impact and make the most of the valuable materials they contain. The recycling process allows up to 95% of some materials, such as glass and metal, to be recovered and reintroduced into the production chain, reducing the need to extract and process new resources.

What is the recycling process of solar panels?

¿Qué ocurre con los paneles solares reciclados?

This process is not always the same, as it varies according to the specific technology used to manufacture the panels and the recycling facilities available. Generally, however, the process usually follows the following steps:

Reception and sorting

The first thing to do when solar panels arrive at the recycling centre is to check their condition, and then sort them according to the type of technology and material they contain.

Dismantling

The most important parts, such as the photovoltaic cells, and the aluminium frame are disassembled. This can be done by hand or with specialised machinery.

Separation of materials

In this part, thermal recycling is carried out, whereby, once the glass and aluminium have been removed, the panel undergoes a thermal process at over 500ºC to burn off the plastics that are still attached. After this step, we continue with delamination, which serves to remove the polymer layer and separate the metal contacts.

Recycling

Recovered materials are subjected to procedures to purify them and prepare them for reuse.

What are the benefits of recycling solar panels?

Positive impact on the environment

Panel recycling avoids the extraction of new materials by recovering and reusing materials, thus reducing the carbon footprint.

Economic assets

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) estimates that recyclable solar panel materials will become a $15 billion recoverable asset by 2050.

Less landfills

Decrease in landfills containing polluting waste due to recycling of materials.

Boosting the circular economy

Taking advantage of solar panel materials boosts the circular economy, as it avoids producing new materials and, consequently, avoids spending more money.

New jobs

As demand increases, more companies will appear in the market dedicated to the recycling of solar panels.

According to the Energy, Environmental and Technological Research Center (CIEMAT)Spain will generate around 10,000 tonnes of waste per year by 2027. To improve recycling efficiency, research and development projects are being developed, such as the ReProSolar initiative or PVCycle at European level.

The recycling of solar panels is not yet a major concern because of their long lifetime, but it is something we should plan for in the future. The more the use of solar energy grows, the more the need for effective and efficient recycling will increase. By being prepared for the future recycling of solar panels, we can contribute to a more sustainable future.

At Fulgor Solar we guarantee that our solar panels are made with the best quality materials available on the market, so that you can make the most of them for as long as possible.

Design for sustainability

In order to achieve effective solar architectural integration, it is important to know the key principles of sustainable building design:

Building orientation

Locate the building in an area where exposure to the sun is maximised, making the most of sunlight. If the building is already constructed without this in mind, adaptations can be made to maximise the advantages that orientation towards the sun can bring.

Water conservation

Add low-flow fixtures and rainwater harvesting systems to promote efficient use of water resources. Water conservation is a priority, from the design phase through construction.

Passive solar design

This is a type of construction that uses the building itself to use sunlight as a natural resource. They use sunlight for natural heating and cooling, reducing the need for additional air conditioning systems.

Energy efficient materials

Use materials with low embodied energy (energy used to produce them) and high thermal performance (insulation). The efficiency of materials in buildings can have different connotations and can indicate the degree to which the material can withstand a load or stress.
